HMAS Platypus Sub Base

For the first time in 150 years, the Sub Base Platypus is open to the public. Once supplying coal gas to residents and businesses on the North Shore for over 50 years, the Sub Base Platypus became a Torpedo Factory during World War II suppling allied navies in the South Pacific. Later, and after World War II the Torpedo Factory served as operational headquarters and communications base for the Australian Submarine Squadron. Today, the Sub Base Platypus has been transformed into a vibrant public community hub, where historic spaces are revealed, reimagined, and activated by a range of cultural, recreational and commercial uses.
